Five Easy Pieces (1970)

IMDB rating: 7.50

Plot: Bobby Eroica Dupea (Jack Nicholson) comes from a well-bred family of musicians, and once showed great promise as a concert pianist. By nature a restless, angry individual, Bobby left his family and his music when he could no longer endure the dull, cloistered routine of daily practice. He took to the road, wanting to “see the world,” and hopefully find something or someone to quell his inner turmoil. He has settled in a small town as an oil rigger, where his life consists of going to work, arguing with his dimwitted but loving girlfriend Rayette (Karen Black), and bowling every night with his friend Elton (Billy “Green” Bush). Not surprisingly, this routine begins to disgust Bobby and, fed up, he decides to travel to Puget Sound, Washington to pay his family a visit. Leaving Rayette at a nearby motel, Bobby goes home and is reunited with his family.

Wedding Planner? Help me please?
Okay so, my friend Meghan is getting married and she asked me to be her wedding planner. I said yes and I thought it would be easy. It will be a very small wedding. We won’t have too many guests. We do not have the money for this. We have exactly five dollars so far to spend on the wedding. How can we make the money needed? We want to use as little as possible. We can’t do many jobs. We have the dress and tux covered. We also have the guests gifts covered. We have brides maids and the maid of honors dresses covered. We have the groomsmen and best mans tuxes already taken care of. We have the music. But there is still so so so much to be done. Such as food and drinks. Invitations. They need rings for each other and we need decorations. We want to rings to be fake gold and cubic zirconium because we definitely cannot afford real gold and diamonds. We need them to be really cheap too. Like $20 or less. We need flowers too. We also need a very cheap veil. We need cake. A cheap one too like under $30. We have the top piece taken care of. We need to get a lot more but those are just off the top of my head. We need to buy very cheap too. Like this whole wedding needs to cost under $250. Maybe we can go up to $300 but, that’s it! Help me find the cheapest prices on everything this wedding needs. (Including the things I did not mention like a Camera and stuff ect.) Thanks so so so very much for your time and help it means a lot to me and will help me even in the littlest of ways and the biggest. Help me make my BFF’s big day be very special! Again, thank you so so much.

Hmm well okay outside wedding is about the only option…borrow chairs (& tables, if you need them) from someone you know that has them like a church. You wont need decor outdoors its naturally pretty. Flowers are hard because they are usually very expensive but try a craft store maybe and use fake flowers and make your own arrangements. Cake…make it YOURSELF…make it fun…it will be more special that way. Make invitations yourself. You can buy blank invitations for like $7 a box and use a printer to make them exactly how you want them. Rings are easy…mens spinner rings are cheap and womens rings are easy to come by in CZ…check out walmart. Camera is very easy…you don’t need professional pics use disposable and hand them out to several guests to take snapshots…borrow someones digital camera to take the more posed pics. If accessories are a problem the bridesmaids need to buy them their selves. Food is super easy when cost is a factor, make it a pot-luck reception…its fun not tacky and everyone will have enjoy it. Drinks…dont do anything alcoholic, too expensive. Just do punch…sherbet & Sprite…very simple very cheap. Veils you can find ANYWHERE cheap…do some hunting online they are not hard to find. Idk what else you need help with but if you need anymore ideas let me know! Good luck!

PS- If you live near a Dollar Tree they will help you out alot as in some decor all the plates napkins etc…also they have greenery & floral. You can do thank you cards from there…maybe find something else special in there that you can throw in. Everything is a dollar in there and for a budget it is great!!! I’ve thrown plenty of baby showers with stuff from there so check it out and again goodluck!!

Getting married in a church is definately out, as they have hire fees.

My advice would be to get married in a garden / park, where you don’t need decorations. If there’s not many people, you won’t need too many chairs, or if it’s a short ceremony, they don’t need chairs at all.

For the reception, a bbq at a hosts house (ie parents of groom/bride; best man even the bride and grooms own place) would be cheapest. That way you’ll just need the appropriate foods. (Salads, chops sausages etc for summer, roast, hot vegies for winter)

As for the rings, you can google jewellery on the internet, and some places actually sell real gold and diamond rings for cheap. Though, wedding rings aren’t usually fancy. They’re generally just bands of gold, with the brides band that has maybe a diamond set in it, but more often than not, it has no decoration.

If you don’t have much money to spend on the wedding, an informal wedding is the best way to go. If it’s not what the bride/groom want, then you can reassure them that when they save their money, they can always have a second wedding that can be lush and have all the things the first wedding didn’t.

I’ve seen a couple questions like this pop up recently, and I’m not sure what it’s all about. But please remember there’s a fine line between being a "wedding planner" and simply doing her work for her. If she’s trying to have a wedding she can’t afford, it’s not your job to make it work. I know she’s your BFF and she’s probably well intentioned, but she’s putting you in a horrible spot.

You need to sit her down and discuss this because every wedding has "incidentals" that drive the cost up. This includes the license, the officiant fee, gifts for the attendants (not the same as whatever you give guests), invitations and postage, etc. This stuff can easily get to $200 even in a small wedding. And if you have to stay under $30 for the cake, you can’t even get get it at a grocery store for that. You’re going to have to go with cupcakes or something you make yourself. A grocery store might do a small sheet cake for that, but then you need to taste it, because not all are good.

I’m guessing you guys are really young, and someone needs to give the bride a reality check. You’ll be a nutcase trying to get this organized and she’s not in a position to have a "wedding planner". There’s a lot of tough budgeting decisions she needs to make herself. There’s lots of free places to have the actual wedding, but then you factor in the costs of food, napkins, plates, etc.

How long does my hair have to be to get finger waves?
My sister’s wedding is coming up in May and I am her Maid of Honor. I have an old fashioned style and would like to get finger waves in my hair. I have pretty short hair, like a pixie cut with longer bangs. It’s 1-3 inches in the back and my bangs are about 3 inches long. This is what my hair looks like right now:

If it’s at a bar, probably not. Depending on where you live you may have to be 19 before you can be in the same place the serve booze. Most states make you be 18 before you can be in places where booze is served. Some places, like my home state of Nebraska, just segregate the Bar section from the dance section and allow in people as young as 16 into the dance area. However most states won’t let people under 18 into a bar.

What makes the North so much better than the South? United States-wise anyway..?
In the U.S., people have this notion that the south is comprised of nothing but idiots. We’re hillbillies, bumpkins, redneck and ghetto. But northerners are soooo much better than southerners. It’s true they have a higher literacy rate and most bad things are associated with the south…Ok, I may be losing my point. LOL. However, I don’t think it’s fair to generalize the whole region.

People will say things like, "I’m so glad I’m from the north…those southerners are so barbaric." People accuse us of bring the U.S. down and we even get blamed for destroying rap/hip-hop music. "The south ruined hip hop for good." I’ve seen that so many times on hip hop forums it’s crazy.

Some black people from the north will say things like how can blacks still live in the south and they’ll even demean us solely because we’re southern based. Uh, if they knew anything, they’d know that they are southern based as well. They are most likely products of migrants who were from the south.

Anyway, my point is just because you’re from the north does not mean you’re immune to any ill the south so-called faces. We’re all Americans so stop being regionists. Yes, regionists is akin to racists.

What do you think, OCG? If you’re from another country and you experience regionism, you may answer as well.

I’ve never heard of such a thing… Ever hear of anyone retiring and moving north? NO.. Let’s just leave things as they are. We don’t want those damn yankees finding out how great it is in the South. Let them stay up there and keep believing themselves.
Fonz | Feb 08, 2010

I have nothing against the South but I think the reason why many Northerners and West Coasters look down upon the South is because the South is the poorest region of the country and struggles with huge unemployment, poverty rates and low education ratings. The roads also tend to be terrible and the South has a very long and harsh history of racism.

According the the UN, The Human development of some Southern States are on the same level as some developing countries. Mississipi and Alabama are examples;

ya! well you know what it is nice and warm here in sunny old Florida;) hows the weather northerners?!

actually i read some where that people from the south tend to have "cultures of honor" meaning a Southerner is more likely to get angry and aggressive when someone attacks him, his family, or where he is from, and northerners tend to be more chill about it…….

hey we got southern hospitality, right?
woodstock | Feb 08, 2010

Well, being from the Washington, DC area, I always felt caught in the middle. Literally and culturally, the DC area has parts of the North and the South. I have also lived in the South, and to be honest, I liked the laid back, warmer vibe down South. We have it around DC, but it is more emphasized down further South.

I think some of that negative thinking comes from back in the day, people viewed the South as backwards and racist. In small towns, it still is to some extent. Funny thing is, more and more people are moving back South because of the lower cost of living than in the North, and the warmer climate and culture.

As far as thinking they are better, I don’t know why they would feel that way about Southerners, especially black people, most of them came from the South and are only up North because their families moved there to find work, but many black people still have roots down there, and black people all up and down the East Coast still eat "soul food". No need to hate on anybody, that’s for sure.
Zumaria | Feb 08, 2010

nothing. im from da SOUF

That Donkey Dicc Mexican (#3) | Feb 08, 2010

There are and always have been some noteworthy and reputable blacks from the south. But at the same time, there are some extreme sub-cultural differences. I dont want to really elaborate, it may come across rudely- but I have experienced lower-class southern people, and it was atrocious- but higher class southern people seem a little uppidy. I think somewhere in the middle, there is more common ground from coast to coast.
cocoa butter | Feb 08, 2010

Well, As a proud southerner. I will say there is much to dislike about the south.

1. This is definitely the most conservative region of the U.S. and probably always will be.
2. 80% of U.S. executions occur in the south
3. For the most part, it is not very diverse
4. There are many people here who suffer from low education, unemployment, and poverty

On the other hand, there is much to appreciate. The food is good, the pace of life, well it’s slower and perhaps that’s a good thing, the hilly countryside(south carolina), the atlantic, and the gulf(as long as you go to alabama or florida). While it isn’t diverse in many areas, and yes there is still much racism, there are lots who do not mind integration or mingling w/ other races. I like the south, b/c I need a balance of conservatism and liberalism. I could not live in a primarily liberal state, b/c they have no idea what moderation is. I also like that I can say hello to somebody down here, and people not look at me like I’m an idiot. Also, there are some great universities in this area as well.

Anyway, it’s subjective. So I wont say one is better than the other b/c the ways of life vary too much. One from the north, would hate that there isn’t snow. While me, I’d gladly trade my hot ass summers for a summer of 70-80 degree Fahrenheitt days. (Of course though I live in Louisiana, and my hometown is not far from the gulf, so my summers are very humid)
Joel S | Feb 08, 2010

That Northern "arrogance" is no new phenomenon
and as you alluded to, it is primarily borne of ignorance.

As is often the case when you have outsiders passing judgement, rarely do all aspect get fair assessment. Unfortunately many "northerners" honestly believe that all of the south is rural countryside or backwoods scenery, with the occasional dude ranch here or there.
I find that kind of misguided thinking laughable most of the time, but I realize that is because I know better.
Those who have never visited the sophisticated cities and metropolitan areas of the South don’t have the luxury of that knowledge. As a result they are forced to rely on archaic images of what the South was, and in some unfortunate areas may still be, and they use that to shape their idea of the entire region.

I have been blessed to reside in a world-class city located in the South and as such have experienced what I believe to be the best of both worlds:
The culture, diversity, and opportunity of a major city
along with the warmth, comfort, and hospitality the South is known for.

Tormented

Directors: Wright Jon

Actors: Pettyfer Alex,Leonidas Dimitri,Dean Calvin,Alexander Olly,Floyd James,Mitchell Hugh,Hopper Tom,Amory Peter,Comedy,Horror,

Without belief in hereafter (ahirat),how can old people get any pleasure of life?
It is only through the life of the hereafter that the elderly, who form half of mankind, can endure the proximity of the grave, and be consoled at the thought that their lives, to which they are firmly attached, will soon be extinguished and their fine worlds come to an end. It is only at the hope of eternal life that they can respond to the grievous despair they feel in their emotional child-like spirits at the thought of death. Those worthy, anxious fathers and mothers, so deserving of compassion and in need of tranquillity and peace of mind, will otherwise feel a terrible spiritual turmoil and distress in their hearts, and this world will become a dark prison for them, and life even, grievous torment.
What do you think about it?

By living.

We don’t have to welcome the prospect of ceasing to exist, but we can accept it as reality without the ‘despair and torment’ you suggest.

throw off your straight jacket and start to live then you will not worry about old age. growing old is part of life and as the body becomes more infirm you learn to enjoy life in other ways. You enjoy the company of your children and grandchildren, you read more books listen to classical music and life is always worth living. People do not need these happy ever after folk tales be they from the bible or koran or torah live your life do good whenever you and die in peace.

Life is so wonderful if you do not spend half your day worrying whether or not something is haram and the other half washing your hands and praying join the 21st century and start having some fun

You reminded me with a morality play called "Everyman", I’m not sure if you’re familiar with it but it has some of the themes related to what you’re talking about. I shall explain.

Death comes to Everyman, who at that time, was busy with his earthly possessions. He was not ready for death and meeting God to be judged. He asks death to give him time, as for his "book" is not ready. Bear in mind that this is not even related to Islam, but religions are interrelated. Everyman then seeks companions, he seeks his fellowship, and they make empty promises saying that they will stand by his side forever, but when they know abt the death, they desert him. He then seeks his kinship, and also they give him empty promises and when they find out about death the desert him as well. He then moves to his goods (earthly possessions) of which he is so in love with but still his earthy possession cannot go along until he finally read for his deeds. But his deeds are too "weak" to go with him but never really desert him like the others did.

The main theme of play is how everyman seeks refuge in everything BUT God. Thinking that death can be postponed and that his earthly possession would save him the grief but in the end he finds out that his life was vain, and that time should have been of more use in what is worth as in worshiping God and doing good deeds.

I don’t know why I shared this, but inshallah it will benefit you in your writing. I do agree with what you said, but even though life is bound to end, we ought to live it the best we can.
~TGS~ | Feb 03, 2010

As Salaam to you all,

From the time of your very birth you are on the road to death but none of us know when it will happen. It is not only the elderly who will die for more people have died in a young state. When the time is right Allah (Subhanahu wa ta’ala) will call, and you will go, even though you do not want to. Man and woman want to hold on to life for as long as they can but they cannot stop death from coming.

Here comes the crunch, in that the Christians believe that they are saved in their belief in Jesus (
