Recommend good movies with deep thinking themes?
I need some suggestions for some really good deep thinking movies such as Silence of the Lambs, Oxford Murders, Revolver….What i dont want is the usual stuff u see in the cinema that always have the same old messages…give me something INTERESTING

I can suggest some interesting movies but they are mainly oldies made at a time when studios had to tell a good story to get people to go out and spend their money.
The Razor’s Edge (1946) Don’t waste your time with the 1984 version.
Enchantment (1948)
A Letter To Three Wives (1949)
High Noon (1952) Gary Cooper western.
The Prisoner (1955) So controversial that the Cannes and Venice Film Festivals banned it.
Man of a Thousand Faces (1957)
Silas Marner (1985)
The Straight Story (1999)
Tess of the D’Urbervilles (2008)
The next ones are French (with English subtitles) and are parts 1 & 2 of a continuing story.
Jean de Florette (1986)
Manon of the Spring (1986)

The ones older than Silas Marner are all going to be hard to find, but if you’re like most people today you probably wouldn’t watch them anyway because they’re B&W.

Has anyone driven to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas and back in a day?

We are staying in Vegas for 3 nights and were hoping to drive out to the Canyon. I believe you can’t get to the skywalk by car – only via tour bus. Is this correct? Does anyone have any idea how long it would take to drive from Vegas to any other part of the Canyon? We only want to do it within the day.

Unlike the posters above, I have actually been to both the Skywalk (Grand Canyon West) and the South Rim of the National Park.

First the Skywalk… yes, you can drive to Grand Canyon west by car and a lot of people do. It is mostly paved, but there is one 12 mile stretch that is an unpaved gravel road and can be washboardy at times. You can make it in a regular car and certainly do NOT need a 4WD, however I would not recommend something with a really low clearance and either way you will get dusty. The distance from Las Vegas is 121 miles and takes about 2.5 hours. Note however that because of people driving too fast over the washboards of the gravel road and the heavy car wash required afterwards, many Vegas rental companies have a clause the restricts taking the car out of Nevada to prevent people from using them to go the Skywalk.

As for the Skywalk experience… it is important to note that Grand Canyon West is NOT part of Grand Canyon National Park nor is it anywhere near it (the park is 100 mile further upstream). While the canyon is certainly deep and scenic at GC West, it is no where near as deep, wide or colorful and interesting as in the National Park. Seeing the canyon at GC West is NOT the same thing as seeing it at the park. Also, you can not wander or hike at GC West, you must park at the little airport and buy a tour package – the cheapest that includes going on the Skywalk is about $80 per person. The Skywalk itself is not (IMHO) as interesting as it sounds and it is not located over the Colorado River or 4000 feet high as the marketing claims. While some people enjoy GC West, many visitors have gone away disappointed (it has got 2 out of 5 stars from previous visitors on TripAdvisor). I would not worry too much about reservations, they are not getting that many people.

As for visiting the South Rim of the National Park… as others have noted it is about a 4.5 hour drive from Las Vegas along major interstates and highways. The park entrance fee is $25 per car (good for a week). You could certainly make it there and back in a long day of driving and going on your own would give you the flexibility to see what you want and stay as long as you want. However, you may want to consider a bus tour so that you can just sit back and relax and let them do the driving (especially if you were not planning on getting a rental car otherwise).

The North Rim of the National Park is also about 4.5 hours from Las Vegas (and a somewhat more interesting drive), however the North Rim lodge, visitor center and other facilities don’t open until mid-May.

Boomer Gal – my apologies and I stand corrected regarding other people visiting both. :) However, one certainly does not need 4WD to reach the Skywalk (afterall, full-size tour buses travel it daily) and it is a much shorter day trip from Vegas than the South Rim. That being said, I would still recommend the South Rim over the Skywalk and agree that it would be better to spend a night at the canyon (or in Flagstaff/Williams) rather than do it as a day trip.

We drove from Vegas to the Grand Canyon a couple of years ago. It was a long drive. I just checked a website & it says 4 1/2 hours, which seems about right to me, to the South Rim. So I guess you could do it in one day, but it’d be a very long day with an awful lot of driving. I wouldn’t recommend it, personally. We spent a few nights in the area & went white water rafting. It was absolutely incredible!
http://www.thecanyon.com/webpage.php/swm c/webpages/directions-grand-canyon-south -rim
You can get to the sky walk by car, but I would not recommend it, it is a long, rough road, & many portions are unpaved. I think you would want a 4 wheel drive, and that is definitely something you would not want to try doing in one day from Vegas, as just the leg from the highway to the sky bridge is a couple of hours each way.

um… sascoaz… I have been to the south rim & to the sky walk area. When we were at the sky walk area it was on the way back from white water rafting & we were in a bus. The road was pretty rough. I wouldn’t want to drive my own car on that road, for sure.

And I agree w/ Jacob – maybe it CAN be done, but I think you would be shortcahnging yourself if you did it in one day.

It’s 277.3 mi, 4 hr 20 min. Leave your hotel by 7am and it’s doable. Click the link below.
rhino72032 | Apr 12, 2009

Vegas to the south rim takes about 4-5 hours 1 -way. It can be done in 1 day but its a long trip. All the major hotels have tour desks, Ask about taking a 1 day bus trip or plane trip instead.

The north rim is a bit closer but it doesn’t open until May 15th. It is not a developed as the south rim & has lesser views but gets much less visitors.

The sky-walk is on Indian territory. There is a road that goes out but most people take the bus tours. They recommend you have a reservation as the amount of time you have on the bridge is limited & requires a ticket to enter.
rpf5 | Apr 12, 2009

It will take 4-5 hrs. Dont know about the skywalk. It is roughly the same distance to the North Rim in Utah, maybe a little farther.
Las Vegan likes to read! | Apr 13, 2009

I have driven it several times. It is more like 5 to 5.5 hours unless you never stop to use a restroom or buy gas. Once you pass the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead there is nothing to see except lots of empty desert and few rest stops on the way. While it can be done in one day, why would you do that? we are talking ten hours of driving for what, an hour at the Grand Canyon? The Grand Canyon is huge! Once you get there, wouldn’t you like to actually enjoy it? The West Rim with the Skywalk is bogus. It is not very scenic and they charge over $20 per person to go on the Skywalk. That Skywalk gets old pretty quick, too.

When you think of the Grand Canyon or see photos of it in travel brochures you are seeing the South Rim. If you really want to experience the Grand Canyon, I strongly suggest you either make that your destination and forget Las Vegas if you only have three days or save this side trip until you have more time.

There are hotels all around the Grand Canyon. We stay at one right outside of the entrance. On the drive out stop and see the Hoover Dam. When you get to the hotel by the Canyon, check in and go right to the Canyon and watch the Sunset. Then go back to your hotel, have dinner and a good nights sleep. Get up before dawn, have breakfast and go into back to the Canyon and watch the sunrise. Now you have all day to explore all the Grand Canyon has to offer. There is a road all around the rim with lots of places to stop and plenty of overlook points. There are also some gift shops and even an observation tower.

That is the way to see the Grand Canyon. Not a long drive, short view, long drive.

You can make it in one day, leave very early and arrive late. You can drive your car to the skywalk but it is a dirt road.

I havent done it personally but know a few who have.

It can be done but the whole trip becomes too rushed and feels like a chore. (Too much work for too little enjoyment)

My regular grocery store carries it. If yours doesn’t, try checking some of the other local stores in your area. (You can call them and ask so you don’t have to drive all over the place, they’ll tell you if they carry it or not over the phone.)

If you’re in a rural area (which I know doesn’t have much selection because I grew up in a rural area), look for places to order it online.

How to restore a broken relationship? (really need answers)?
Me and my boyfriend (well, friend now, I guess) have been together for 3 years. We did rush things, given we started living with each other within 4 months of our relationship. Things hit off well with us and we enjoyed so much each others company (I can speak for the both of us). Recently, we had a baby girl, who is now 4 months old. From the time I was pregnant I noticed that things were getting a little rocky with us. Arguments started to be more frequent and we started to get a little physical with each other while we were arguing. While things were bad between us, I did talk to a few guys online, guys I used to talk to before I met my boyfriend, and because I wasn’t getting attention from him, I was liking the attention from the other guys. Nothing went furthur then a chat online, and it had never even crossed my mind to cheat on my man. Anyways, a month ago we went seperate ways, we don’t live together anymore. My heart is broken and I’m kinda lost without him. He keeps telling me he needs time, he needs peace of mind and he keeps telling me to be patient. As of now, he calls me just a friend, though when we are together we do act like more than friends. It hurts me, and it upsets me a lot because I have way more feelings for him than just a friend. I don’t know how to go about all of this. Do I wait for him? give him the time he has been asking for, and try my damn best to be patient in waiting for him? Do I just enjoy the time we do spend together, and not mention being with each other because it is still sensitive? I need help (not mental, lol, just answers). What can I do on my end to get him to love me fully again and restore our relationship??

The best thing you can do is just be there for him, be there when he needs you because if you were together for 3 years and have a daughter then he isn’t rushing anywhere far, I think you two will get back together but with time, be there when he wants you, like he says be patient, wait for him, don’t let go.
Best of luck :)

Are you questioning security at the WH if uninvited people can crash the party?
Wednesday November 25th 2009, 23:51

"A couple of aspiring reality-TV stars from Northern Virginia appear to have crashed the White House’s state dinner Tuesday night, penetrating layers of security with no invitation to mingle with the likes of Vice President Biden and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

Tareq and Michaele Salahi — polo-playing socialites known for a bitter family feud over a Fauquier County winery and their possible roles in the forthcoming "The Real Housewives of Washington" — were seen arriving at the White House and later posted on Facebook photos of themselves with VIPs at the elite gathering.

"Honored to be at the White House for the state dinner in honor of India with President Obama and our First Lady!" one of them wrote on their joint Facebook page at 9:08 p.m.

But a White House official said the couple were not invited to the dinner, not included on the official guest list and never seated at a table in the South Lawn tent."
